Early 2013 Road Races In Upstate South Carolina


Both recreational and serious runners can participate in a variety of road races in early 2013 in the Upstate of South Carolina. Races range from 5K to longer events over courses that are flat, hilly, and mountainous. Weather conditions are generally good at this time of year, before temperatures and humidity begin to rise. Here are the highlights of some of the most popular races.

The Greenville Track Club sponsors two early season races on February 9. The Green Valley Road Race includes an 8K and a 10 Miler at Furman University. Entry fees are $25 in advance and $30 on race day. The Paris Mountain Trails 12K Race, also scheduled for February 9, is an adventurous trail race through Paris Mountain State Park. The course begins at the park entrance, passes the reservoir, and includes a long climb to the top of the mountain. Entry fee is $12.50 in advance and $20 on race day.

The TD Bank Reedy River Run, one of the South's premier road races, is scheduled for March 1-2 in downtown Greenville. There will be a 10K State Championship, a 5K, and a Kids Run. The Kids Fun Run and the Reedy Great Youth Mile Run will take place on March 1 at 5:45pm on S. Main Street near Fluor Field. The 10K and the 5K are held on March 2 at 8:30am and 8:50am respectively. Those runs begin in front of TD Bank headquarters at 104 S. Main Street. The route will take runners on surface streets through the historic downtown area and past Reedy River Park and the Liberty Bridge. The 10K total purse is $6,830, and the 5K total purse is $1,460. Early registration is $25. Race day entries are $30.

The Greenville Hospital System sponsors a 5K race on March 9. This is in conjunction with the GHS Centennial Half Marathon. The course begins at Gateway Park in Travelers Rest and runs mostly on the Swamp Rabbit Trail towards downtown Greenville. The course is flat and fast. Both races are USATF certified. Entry fees prior to March 2 are $60 for the half marathon and $25 for the 5K. Fees are $70 and $30 after March 2. A $5 shuttle is available from the finish of the half marathon back to the start area.

The City of Seneca holds a Half Marathon and 5K on March 16. The out and back course begins and ends at Shaver Recreational Complex on S. 4th Street. The route goes through historic Seneca and out to Lake Keowee. Early registration fees are $50 for the half marathon and $25 for the 5K. Race day entries are $60 and $30.

The Run for the Clovers 5K Road Race is scheduled for March 16 in downtown Gaffney, as part of the city's Irish Fest. The out and back course is run from Gaffney City Hall. Registration is $20 before March 1 and $25 after March 1.

The Tri-County 5K Road Race is scheduled for May 18 in Anderson, South Carolina. The out and back route is run from the Anderson Campus of Tri-County Technical College. Entry fee is $20, and online registration is available at www.strictlyrunning.com.
